ATC First Aid Training Put To The Test
BY CI JAMES VEY
--------------------
Sgt Lewis Stockwell, aged 17, of 1066 (Hitchin) Squadron recently passed his young lifesaver plus course that was run by his squadron. Little did he know that a few weeks later, the skills he had learnt during the course would be put into practice for real.
Whilst having lunch at his school, Sgt Stockwell (pictured left) acted quickly and calmly when a fellow pupil started to choke very badly on a piece of food. Within seconds, Sgt Stockwell has assessed the situation and administered some effective back slaps to the pupil. Eventually Sgt Stockwell managed to clear the pupil’s airway when the piece of food dislodged as a result of the back slaps.
Sgt Stockwell said "When doing my first aid training, I did not think I would have to utilise the skills learnt such a short time after the course. In doing so I managed to help someone before the situation could have become extremely serious."
